TIGEM was created in 1994 by the Telethon Foundation, one of Italy's major non-profit organisations, to promote the advancement of research aimed at the disgnosis, prevention and cure of human genetics diseases. TIGEM's mission is to understand the mechnisms of genetic diseases and to develop therapeutic and preventive strategies.

The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) is a basic biomedical research centre, created by initiative of the Department of Universities, Research and Information Society and the Department of Health of the Catalan Government, with the participation of the Pompeu Fabra University, and the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. The objective of the CRG is to promote an excellent basic research in biomedicine and, particularly, in the genomic and proteomic fields. The CRG is located at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB).
